‘An eggnog’s-a-flowin’ party:’ Justin Lacy, Tracy Shedd among 12 musicians to play Bourgie Nights’ annual Christmas show

[Repost from Port City Daily; by Shea Carver, December 1, 2021]

WILMINGTON – When ILM Unplugged started a decade ago at Bourgie Nights, it welcomed numerous local musicians and singer-songwriters each month to take the mic and test-drive their original tunes in front of an audience. Then, each December, the unplugged series got the tinsel treatment. Performers would sing their fave holiday carols and one original song, while spiked eggnog and general camaraderie fueled the most celebratory concert of the season.

“I consider this the ‘Office Holiday Party’ for singer/songwriters in the area,” Bourgie Nights manager Sean Thomas Gerard said.

After a Covid-19 hiatus, Christmas Unplugged returns. The tradition takes place Friday night, featuring 12 local musicians, each performing two holiday songs and one original tune as part of their set.

“I leave the holiday aspect of the show open to interpretation,” Gerard said. “Singers are allowed to play anything that reminds them of the holidays, and obviously it is open to the celebration of all faiths.”

A local musician and founder of rock outfit Onward, Soldiers, Gerard said he went back to a group chat he started in 2019 to cull this year’s holiday lineup. He reached out to performers who take the stage annually, including Justin Lacy, Tres Altman, and Jason Andre. Gerard also folded in newer faces to the lineup.

It will be Tracy Shedd’s first time joining the shindig. Though Shedd moved to Wilmington a few short years ago, she has had ties to the area since the ‘90s, as her songs were featured on “One Tree Hill” and “Dawson’s Creek,” both filmed locally.

She and her husband, James Tritten, have recorded with local artists as well on their label, Fort Lowell Records, which started in 2009 in their then-hometown of Tucson, Arizona. The couple now lives in downtown Wilmington.

Shedd has chosen to play the holiday song “I’d Like You for Christmas” by Julie London, of whom she has been a lifelong fan. She also will pay homage to her favorite decade of sounds in “Just Like Christmas” by Low.

“James and I both adore the band,” Shedd said. “They are the definition of ‘90s music for us, and we were very fortunate to perform with them in the late ‘90s when we lived in Boston, MA.”

Joining the alt-rock musician onstage will be James Sardone (Brickbat) and Brian Weeks (De La Noche, Summer Set), who will back her as well during her original song “Holding Space.” Shedd recorded it for the “GROW” compilation released by Fort Lowell in 2020, as a fundraiser and awareness campaign for Black Lives Matter.

“The lyrics mean a lot to me,” Shedd said. “It’s about being present, listening, and holding space for others.”

The song felt apropos for the return of Bourgie’s holiday concert. The last Christmas Unplugged was held December 13, 2019 and the downtown’s venue final show took place held Feb. 28, 2019 before the Covid-19 shutdown.

“Our first show back was August 1, 2021,” Gerard confirmed.

For artists, performing live music throughout the health crisis was heavily altered. Many deferred to livestreams and other creative ways to reach audiences. Gerard utilized his downtime to create the LP “Finally Found a Paradise” in his home studio. He will perform the song “Sail off in the Sunset” at Christmas Unplugged, as well as “The Christmas Song” and “Have Yourself A Merry Christmas.”

“As musicians, it’s always hard to catch each other playing live throughout the year,” Gerard said. “We’re always gigging or working, and rarely find the time to see our peers play. This is the one gig each year where a lot of us are in one room and can experience a show together.”

Justin Lacy has been a part of every Bourgie holiday soiree since its inception. Last year, upon the concert’s cancelation, he turned his attention to creating a lo-fi Covid Christmas album, “The Clampamp Parade,” with his favorite local indie bands all recording a track from home. 2021’s return to the stage is a touch more special, as there is a greater need to embrace a face-to-face reunion among colleagues.

“This is my very first time performing my songs in public since the pandemic,” Lacy said. “In fact, the last time I performed was the 2019 holiday showcase at Bourgie. I miss it, and I’m looking forward to getting back up there.”

Having to play only three songs instead of a full set, Lacy said, presented a feasible way to ease back into the swing of things. He also called it the most “heart-warming show of the year,” filled with vibrancy and palpable support.

“It’s kinda like all the musician egos are (somewhat) stripped away, and everyone opens up for this playful, holly jolly, sometimes corny extravaganza,” he said. “Or maybe it’s just the eggnog.”

First performed over a decade ago at the Soapbox, Lacy’s holiday standard, “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,” has become an expected treat any time he takes a stage in December. “I am obligated to perform it every single year. Some kind of Faustian bargain with the late Dr. Seuss, I think,” he said.

Lacy also recorded an original holiday tune in 2017, “Christmas on TV,” which he looks forward to dusting off the jingle bells for, even if it means he has to relearn it each holiday season. “Every year I’m like, ‘What the hell are these chords again and how did I come up with this?’” he quipped.

The musician will debut a new track, “Honest Honey,” to appear on his solo album, slated for release in 2022. Lacy also just released the 11-track LP  “Hands” with his band Library Baby a few weeks ago; however, come Friday he only will perform solo — well, until he manages to pull friends onstage to join him, something he said he does every holiday showcase.

“[I’m] usually trying to incorporate some kind of odd Christmastime instrumentation,” he said. “This year it’s handbells.”

The sounds reverberating throughout the venue usually culminate in a community singalong of some sort, though Gerard won’t “confirm or deny” such is the case for 2021.

“[B]ecause it’s the holidays, there is a whole lot of cheer going around,” Lacy promised. “Of all the shows I play and work every year, this one is the most fun to be part of. … The first year I attended, I prepared a solo set and some Christmas banter. When I got there, it was clear … it was more of an eggnog’s-a-flowin’ party atmosphere, not an audience sitting down ready for a story. So now I bring the Christmas party.”

Doors to Bourgie Nights (127 Princess St.) open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3. The concert is also a Toys for Tots fundraiser, with a $10 suggested donation or an unwrapped, new toy. Christmas Unplugged, presented in collaboration with Modern Legend, will feature performances by: Justin Lacy, Mike Blair, Tracy Shedd, Kicking Bird, Julia Rothenberger, Sean Thomas Gerard, Billy Heathen, Travis Shallow, Mark Jackson, Tres Altman, Kyle Lindley, and Jason Andre.

[REVIEW] GROW: A Compilation In Solidarity With Black Lives Matter

[Repost from Daily Vault; by Tom Haugen, November 19, 2021]

The Wilmington, North Carolina imprint Fort Lowell Records assembles a very diverse cast of regional artists here, where 100% of the sales from the record are donated to the North Carolina New Hanover County NAACP.

Tracy Shedd starts the listen with the soulful and dreamy “Holding Space,” where a hypnotic quality enters the stylish delivery that's got plenty of pop spirit. The album then takes an abrupt turn onto the dance floor with the beat friendly and rhythmic “That Kind Of Love” by Life Of Saturdays, and Summer Set follows with buzzing synth and post-punk nods that flow with light melodies across “Comfortable Town.”

Nearing the end of Side A, the thumping, raw garage rock of Neon Belly's “They Boys Are Alright” brings plenty of grit to the affair, while “Come On Over” offers a gentle, nearly slo-core sort of feeling that eventually builds into a crisp indie-rocker thanks to Pinky Verde.

Kicking Bird's “What Would All The Other Girls Say (If They Knew What I Was Doing)” is both the song with the longest title and the best track present, where a charming doo-wop angle is met with a swirling indie-pop friendly execution.

The back half of the album showcases The Love Language's busy and soaring rocker “Throwing Darts,” as well as the subtle Americana of “Strange & Electrifying” by Sean Thomas Gerard. The Rosebuds turn in the best selection from the deeper cuts, where “Get Up Get Out” is part club rock, part indie rock, and is delivered with the perfect amount of power and beauty.

The impetus for this project began after the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis by four police officers, and the money raised will help in eradicating further racial injustices. The bands all donated their work for the occasion, and they represent obscure bands that are overlooked as well as bigger names in the world of independent rock. Regardless of popularity, though, every tune here is fantastic, and the cause is undoubtedly one of the most pressing problems we face today, which makes this an essential listen for multiple reasons.

Rock band Kicking Bird emerges from pandemic as one of Wilmington's most potent live acts

[Repost from StarNews; by John Staton, August 9, 2021]

Wilmington has seen plenty of fun gatherings since things began to reopen, but one of the most lit reopening moments of 2021 remains the rock and pop band Kicking Bird's incendiary mid-April show at Palate. With much of the crowd still wearing masks at the outdoor gig, people danced their heads off, including a gaggle of kids (most of them belonging to one band member or another) who rocked out directly in front of the stage.

Kicking Bird -- which is led by the married couple Shaun and Shaylah Paul, who write songs and sing lead on different tunes -- has been playing locally for several years now. But by late 2019, right before the pandemic shut everything down, the band had established a reputation as one of Wilmington's most potent live acts thanks to hooky, exuberant rockers like "Radio Waves." Kicking Bird came roaring out of the pandemic with that rep fully intact, and has killed during sweaty shows at both Palate and Satellite.

On Thursday, Aug. 12, the band will play the pier at Carolina Beach's Ocean Grill & Tiki Bar along with local upstarts Pleasure Island. Kicking Bird also has a new batch of really fun songs, "The Covid Tapes," which they recorded late last year and released earlier this month.

Shaun Paul sings and plays guitar and Shaylah Paul sings and plays keys. Transplanted Brit Robin Cooksley plays lead guitar, with Tom Michaels (The Frondeurs) on bass and Greg Blair (Holland Shelter) on drums.

And while their mix of girl-group vibes, tweaky guitar solos, poppy hooks and amped-out riffs can make Kicking Bird sound like they could be the house band for a dance party straight out of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," Kicking Bird essentially traffics in syrup-free, powerfully delivered rock 'n' roll love songs.

"I think we're a pop band at heart, with punk tendencies," the stylishly mustachioed, heavily tatted Shaun Paul said over early-evening beers at the Satellite recently. "My number-one favorite music is The Supremes and The Ramones, and they're basically the same thing. That style of three-chord pop that's got a hook chorus, a couple of ooh-ooh-oohs in it, that's what I love the most. Everything, for me at least, kind of starts with that."

Shaun grew up in Wilmington -- his parents own the legendary Hot Wax surf shop, which he now manages -- playing in local bands and graduating from Hoggard High School. He and Shaylah first met in Chicago, where he was living at the time and where she's from, in 2008 when he was in a band with her ex-boyfriend. In 2009, they ran into each other at Chicago bar/venue The Empty Bottle and Shaylah gave Shaun a demo CD she'd recorded.

"I was like, You should check out my band,'" Shaylah said. "And he was like, 'You should check out mine.'"

They ended up playing together in a group called Chaperone -- "Pretty much as long as we've been together we've been in a band together," Shaylah said -- before the couple got married, had a now-9-year-old son and moved to Wilmington.

Shaun actually started Kicking Bird in Chicago with his brother-in-law, but the band only played a couple of shows there before he and his wife relocated. Shaylah initially joined in 2015 so that the band could use her songs and would have enough material to play a two-hour gig at Satellite.

She writes her own songs -- "What Would All the Other Girls Say (If They Knew What I Was Doing)," released last year on Fort Lowell Record's Wilmington-centric GROW: A Compilation in Solidarity with Black Lives Matter is a slice of girl-group heaven -- and also collaborates with her husband on his tunes.

When they take the songs to band practice, Cooksley will add ragged guitar riffs, and Blair or Michaels will sometimes change the direction of tunes with their rhythmic insight.

A multitude of influences are apparent, from the obvious girl-group and punk-pop leanings to boozy guitar rock and even, on the very groovy "Stacy London," some '70s-style classic rock vibes.

"We're just trying to listen to everything that's out there, old and new," Shaylah said.

"The Covid Tapes" finds the band reveling in rock songs about love that are very easy to love. The driving, hooky "Don't Stop!" has Shaun and Shaylah singing, "Don't stop/ Ever giving me what I want/ Baby, it's you." The rocked-out girl-group progressions of "Red Sonja" -- Shaun's ode to Shaylah's red hair? -- turn poetic when he sings about the "diamonds crushed back to coal in the middle of your eyes."

At the end of the day, Kicking Bird is a family affair. Not only are the Pauls given to to doing endearingly goofy, cute-couple Instagram posts together, but drummer Blair and guitarist Cooksley "and their families are like our best friends," Shaylah said. "Our kids are pretty much cousins."

As for their wider Wilmington family, promoter Catherine Hawksworth of the Modern Legend music and gift shop has been a big proponent of the band, whose high-energy show makes fans of most everyone who sees them play.

They should make plenty during their gig at the Ocean Grill, where the outdoor stage and laid-back vibe is a perfect fit for the band's expansive, often thrilling sound.

"It has been a dream of mine" to play there, Shaylah Paul said. "What more could you ask for as a band than to play on a pier" -- her husband finished her sentence -- "during fireworks!"

6 super-fun things to do for Wilmington's first full weekend of summer

[Repost from StarNews Online; by John Staton, June 24, 2021]

Friday: Tracy Shedd and Kicking Bird

Presented by the vinyl and gift shop Modern Legend, it's a great double bill of music to get your weekend started.

The Wilmington-based singer, songwriter and Fort Lowell Records artist Tracy Shedd will be making her first local appearance since 2019 with this show. Shedd, whose career spans more than 20 years, is a master of deeply groovy indie pop that sounds supremely sweet yet often hints at darkness. Shedd's band will feature a special appearance by longtime Wilmington musician Brian Weeks (De La Noche, Summer Set) on keys.

Also on the bill is the Wilmington garage rock band Kicking Bird, which played an incendiary show outdoors at the Palate bar and restaurant back in April. Some songs have a grungy, girl-group vibe, while others are full-on rockers.

Both acts have songs on the Fort Lowell release "GROW: A Compilation in Solidarity with Black Lives Matter," which is a great collection of Wilmington acts past and present. Sales of the record benefit the North Carolina New Hanover County NAACP.

Details: 9 p.m. June 25 at Satellite Bar and Lounge, 120 Greenfield St., Wilmington.

Win a 'GROW' Signed Test Pressing + Custom Made HeyTVM T-Shirt

Our friends at Gravity Records are hosting a special raffle this weekend -- Saturday-Sunday, March 20-21, 2021 -- to win one-of-nine extremely rare 'Signed' copies of the Test Pressing for our album GROW: A Compilation in Solidarity with Black Lives Matter; signed by every musician + visual artist involved with GROW.  In addition, artist HeyTVM has made a very limited edit GROW t-shirt that will also included in the raffle with the Test Pressing; they will custom printed to each winner's unique size.  The raffle only costs $5.00 per ticket to enter, and you enter as many times as you want.  Just like all sales from GROW, 100% of the money raised from Gravity Records' raffle this weekend will be donated entirely to the North Carolina New Hanover County NAACP to help ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate race-based discrimination in our community.

A test pressing is what you might expect it to be from its name: a vinyl record made to test the quality of the finished product before pressing thousands of records. Test pressings are made to ensure that the grooves themselves are clean, deep enough, and formed correctly when the master presses into the vinyl blank; that the grooves, label and center hole are not off-center; that the vinyl does not warp; things like that. Test pressings are supposed to be destroyed, and most of them are.

These are literally the FIRST nine copies of GROW that were ever produced, and now is your chance to own one of them... signed by every single member of all (12) bands that are a part of GROW, plus Cover Artist James L. Williams, B-Side Artist and professional skateboard Chet Childress, as well as HeyTVM -- who not only designed the t-shirt for this raffle, but also provided the artwork for the back of the GROW vinyl jacket AND (and) is responsible for coming up with the name "GROW" for the title of the project.

GO TO GRAVITY RECORDS' INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT NOW TO ENTER!

Don't wait, the raffle closes Sunday PM, and winners will be announced on Monday!

Wilmington love songs for Valentine's Day

Most songs are love songs in one way or another: what love feels like, what NOT having it feels like, and all of the infinitely complex feelings and shades of gray in between.

So, with Valentine's Day on Sunday, let's take a look at a few love songs that have been written by Wilmington artists over the years -- at 14, it's just a fraction of what's out there, with dozens more worthy entries that will have to go unmentioned in this story.

*NOTE: This repost of the original StarNews Online post has been edited to highlight the (4) artists out of the total fourteen who were featured on Fort Lowell Records' GROW: A Compilation in Solidarity with Black Lives MatterPlease view the original post here to learn about all fourteen artists that were included.

The Rosebuds: "Wishes for Kisses"

This soaring, anthemic song is from The Rosebuds' 2003 Merge Records debut, "The Rosebuds Make Out." Much of it was written (and, early on, performed) in Wilmington before the band (Ivan Howard and Kelly Crisp) moved to Raleigh. "Wishes for Kisses" captures the nervous hopefulness of a love, or a crush, in its early stages, a dream both unfulfilled and much-ruminated on. Lovely lyric: "But he's thought of everything/ The songbooks, the songs they would sing/ He's makin' his wish list/ And wishin' for kisses tonight."

Sean Thomas Gerard: "Jovie"

The love of a parent for a child is among the emotion's purest forms. Sean Thomas Gerard, known for his work with Wilmington rockers Onward, Soldiers, wrote this dreamy soft-rock tune for his daughter the day before she was born last year. It'll be on his upcoming album "Finally Found a Paradise," set to be released March 30 on Wilmington's own Fort Lowell Records. Lovely lyric:"Jovie/ Hope you let me down slowly/ When you feel like you're fenced in/ Call my name and I'll be there in an instant."

More: New Wilmington song ‘Jovie’ will lift your spirits

Tracy Shedd: "Valentine"

Short and sweet, with a hint of darkness, like chocolate. Wilmington-based singer Shedd's vocals are on time here, dreamy and delicate like a memory of long-lost love. Lovely lyric: "Take me back to the place I can dream/ And I'll dream all day."

Pinky Verde: "Antacid 750s"

Heather Jensen, who records and performs moody indie rock under the moniker Pinky Verde, released the song “Antacid 750s" last year. It's about the intense emotion conjured by a new love affair, and slyly compares those feelings to a different kind of heartburn. Jensen's laid-back delivery makes it all sound like no big deal, but her lyrics give away her true feelings. Lovely lyric: "Days so content with you spent/ Haven't felt a hunger/ Haven't eaten for days/ Don't need to when I'm here with you."
