Single Premiere: Female Gaze - "What Remains"

[Repost from The Big Takeover; September 24, 2026]

I hear it’s hot in Tuscon, Arizona. I’ve never lived in the desert, but I imagine that the constant, agonizing heat becomes a way of life. Maybe, people begin to see the world as a mirage – barely discernible through the dust and haze. For Arizona natives Female Gaze, the rising temperatures have pushed them to new sonic heights. Their newest single “What Remains,” tackles the visceral feelings of new motherhood through a dripping, sweaty haze of psychedelia-infused rock

Female Gaze are no strangers to experimentation. Since songwriter Nelene DeGuzman and bassist Kevin Conklin joined forces with drummer Nicky David Cobham-Morgese, the band has tested the limits of rock and roll. In 2024, they released Tender Futures, an album that works as a loop starting from any song. For their forthcoming album, linea nigra, DeGuzman wrote about her experience of becoming a mother. She describes this new collection of songs as a “a hormonal feverdream of sorting through fears of labor and birth while staring down the seemingly impossible task of mothering while the world is on fire.” While bringing a child into this world seems inherently optimistic, DeGuzman’s work explores the psychic cost of new life.

Starting off with a flurry of power chords, “What Remains” eventually distills into a haunting, mesmerizing ballad (of sorts). DeGuzman’s harmonies are almost frightening, and the minor scales explored in the guitar work reinforce the feelings of terror. Conklin and Corbham-Morgese are a powerful rhythm section, crashing and receding perfectly with the song’s emotional spikes. “What Remains” sounds like a visual representation of the harsh desert sun, it’s warmth becoming increasingly unbearable. There’s tension that feels ready to burst into a frenzy at any moment. And yet, Female Gaze manage to keep the song under their control.

The world feels as though it’s spiraling right now. And while DeGuzman’s lyrics and songs are intensely personal, the sounds that Female Gaze conjures up matches the freefall of these modern times. Enlightened fear, engaged terror – all of us paying attention will find truth in these songs. DeGuzman recalls, “The experience of becoming a mother was staggering, beautiful and connected me to my most elemental experience of existing.” It’s clear from hearing “What Remains” that this is a band that wants to remove the veneer of circumstance and reach for the very heartbeat of life.

Beggar Weeds + The Cadets at The Fuzzy Needle in Wilmington NC on Sat Oct 17th

The Fuzzy Needle is proud to welcome Florida bands Beggar Weeds and The Cadets presented by Fort Lowell Records — live in concert on Saturday, October 17th in Wilmington, North Carolina.

Formed in Jacksonville, Florida, in the mid-1980s, the Beggar Weeds were a trio who chased the offbeat—driving miles out of their way on tour to visit strange museums and roadside oddities. Their music reflected that same fascination with the eccentric: a jangly mix of R.E.M., the almost-falling-apart-ness of the Replacements, and the rumbling melodicism of Hüsker Dü, filtered through Southern folk and punk grit. Their lone 1988 EP, Sure Pants Alot, captured their raw, fast, and fiercely melodic sound—equal parts humor, heartbreak, and rural storytelling.

Michael Stipe of R.E.M. became an early fan, co-producing unreleased sessions that now appear on their career retrospective Tragedy in U.S. History, out February 20, 2026 via Strolling Bones Records. Their inclusion marks the first time these songs have been officially compiled, making the release a crucial document of Southern indie rock.

    The Cadets
originally bonded over college radio and vintage underground surf music. Practicing in a small garage, they developed a frenetic, thundering drum style, fast-twitch searing lead rhythms, and melodic hooks full of nervous energy and unexpected twists. Their sonic experiments blend the energy of early rock & roll with sci-fi adventures and diary entries.

They recently signed with Bar/None Records to release their upcoming career retrospective album, Exile In Marginalia Vol 4, on October 2, 2026.

As always, we hope you can join us. Doors at 7 pm, show at 8 pm.

Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door

OUT NOW: Female Gaze "what remains" [Digital Single]

The second single "what remains" from Female Gaze's sophomore album linea nigra is out and available everywhere as of today September 24th.  “what remains” is just a taste of the brooding, long-form storytelling accomplished throughout linea nigra.  The heaviness of the instruments solidify the excitement and uncertainty of how linea nigra was conceived and allow the listener to enjoy the emotional ride.   Check out Female Gaze "what remains" today!

Pre-Order Doggy Daycare 'Posthumous Release' Now

Fresh from the grave, Doggy Daycare’s Posthumous Release is an all-encompassing southern shoegaze album from the now-defunct (but still kicking) North Carolina band. What started as a bedroom coping mechanism by frontman Adam Bastug morphed into a project that became known for their oversized sound and 90s-inflected guitar work. With Posthumous Release, the band makes good on singles “(forgetting) sarah marshall” and “acid walk”, crafting an album that embraces the listener with warm, fuzzy hooks and forlorn lyrics.

Recorded by Jacob Adams in Wilmington, NC and mixed & mastered by Raleigh, NC’s Max Gowan, the album is both scrappy and massive in sonic scope. Calling to mind the effervescent aggression of My Bloody Valentine and Ride, but fitting right at home with local NC darlings Wednesday and MJ Lenderman, Doggy Daycare’s sound swings from heavy, hooky alt-country (“brainworms”), to sneering, sardonic dance-punk (“now that’s what i call music vol. 1”). Rarely slowing to take a breath, save for “depression spike”, the one track that pays homage to Doggy Daycare’s solipsistic bedroom origins.

Featuring songs penned by both Adam Bastug and lead guitarist Joshua Sullivan, the lyrics tend to contrast the energy of the music. With songs about bitter breakups (“fruit”) and pushing against suicidal ideation (“brainworms”). But there’s light in there, too. Humor finds its way throughout, whether it’s a surprising jab at Toby Keith (before he died…), or setting yourself apart from a toxic scene with “some of these dude’s have allegations, but not me, i’m fucking thriving.” “cloud moves slow” is a punchy, rollicking quickie inspired by Jordan Peele’s Nope, driven by Ethan Jenkin’s dancey bassline. While “now that’s what i call music vol. 1” is a purposefully petty retort to a facebook post about the local music scene, a dance-punk epic pushed by Connor Simpson’s bouncing drumbeat.

Though they dissolved in 2024, the long-gestating Posthumous Release is a testament to a band that shaped their own sound out of the southeast. A walloping record that clawed its way through the dirt, a massive wall of sound that leaves the ears ringing long after. Don’t take it too seriously, it’s okay to laugh at the pain.

Doggy Daycare's debut album titled Posthumous Release will be available everywhere and anywhere on Friday the 13th in November.  You can reserve your copy of the vinyl record now here.

    REVIEW: Female Gaze "bury you"

[Repost from If It's Too Loud; by Ken Sears, August 31, 2026]

Female Gaze is back with a new single that defies what I had expected from the band. Back in 2024, I had referred to their single as "psychedelia meets shoegaze," but "bury you" doesn't have that same sound. Ok, sure... it's not a complete change of sound, and there are still plenty of psychedelic and shoegaze elements in the song, but this latest single has more of a pop driven sound. By pop, I don't mean modern Top 40 or even indie pop. This is more of a 60's girl group vibe, but through a indie rock, lo-fi prism. It's kind of like a DIY version of Psychocandy, with more raw elements and without the extreme wall of noise. Welcome back, Female Gaze! We can't wait to hear more.

Frontwoman Nelene DeGuzman says the band's upcoming album is “...a meditation on my thoughts and feelings around navigating labor, delivery, and the prospect of mothering while the world is on fire.”

You can listen to "bury you" below. linea nigra is due out October 23 on Fort Lowell Records, and is available to pre-order through Bandcamp. For more on Female Gaze, check out the band's website.
